Oil Rig Hopping

This is a great analogy taught by Alex Jeffreys. I’m sure you’ll enjoy reading it and seeing it’s value and relevance!

View the Internet like the ocean, full of wide-open spaces.
If you wanted to go tuna fishing in the ocean, where would you go?
Did you know that the very best tuna fishing in the world is around a man-made oil rig?

If you look beneath the oil rig, there are huge numbers of fish – it’s like a man-made reef!

This is the process:

1. Algae grow on the legs of the rig
2. Clams feed on the algae
3. Little fish eat the clams
4. Little fish attract big fish
5. Big fish attract sharks

And soon you have an entire colony of ocean life around your rig!

Moral of the story:
If you want to attract huge numbers of fish, build an oil rig.

How does this equate to building a successful online business?

Where would you go on the Internet to make money?

See your blog as an oil rig.
Build it with a good foundation.

Keep it simple. Start small and think big. There is a process to be followed.

Add valuable content to your blog = algae
Add valuable content to other people’s blogs = algae
People come along and add their comments = clams
Because of comments from your clams, you soon have customers = small fish
Put value and a free ebook on your blog = fishing hook

This will catch some of the small fish.
You will then learn how to catch the bigger fish with the upsell to your free ebook.

And soon you will have an enormous online ocean community of all types of fish!

Hi Bev,

Dirk here, another one of Alex Jeffreys students. Perfect post to dive into, which is what I’m doing right now, oil rig hopping. I’ve met quite a few interesting people this way and conversed with them on several occassions, asked questions (which I think is key), let alone twit’in, direct emails and other things, pretty awesome.
On several occasions I’ve been spaeking with people half way around the globe, finding they have the same likings I do (connecting).
You’ve done a great job with your blog. Looks good.
Look forward to speaking with you as well.

To your success,
Dirk Blanke
